Glossary
Abdomen: Contains vital organs, such as the heart and most of the digestive system.
Thorax: This is where the wings and legs are attached. (The middle of the beetle).
Elytra: The hard shells covering and protecting the hind wings.
Spiracles: Holes along the body of the beetles in which air is taken in. The beetles can control when the spiracles are open, and when they are closed, to reduce water loss.
Antennae: Long, thin feelers that are used for 'smell' and sensing out their environment.
Head: This is where the brain is held and where the start of the digestive tract begins (pharynx). It also contains the mouthpieces and a pair of antennae. (see above).
